Bike or Run Climbs in Manhattan
Fort George Hill starting at Nagle and Dykeman
So what is the steepest climb you can find in Manhattan? I had a feeling that I have been there and according to the data at
NY Cycle Club, I have been. This 1/3 mile stretch will push you up a
9.5% grade. Try this for some effective repeats on your bike or during a run.
Harlem Hill in Central Park

Central Park Track Club has used this stretch of road to build up some of the best runners ever to hit the streets in New York City. With a
grade of 4.4%, try never to fall below 14 miles per hour when on your bike.
Cycling the Local Mountains of the
Hudson River Valley in New York and New Jersey
Cycling Breakneck Road in New Jersey
Situated near Vernon, New Jersey. You can get close to
1000 feet of climb from the top to bottom with at least 120 feet at 19-20%. The entire climb will keep you
between 16 and 20% with beautiful scenery and a couple of places to grab snacks. You may want to check this one with a car before you attempt to tackle it with a bicycle, there can be significant vehicle traffic and the climb itself may be more then you expect.
Biking Old Mountain and Tweed Road
Try this on your next trip out 9W. The ride here and back from Central Park is 55 miles and a great ride of itself. The grade you will deal with ranges from
13 to 20%, with the very beginning as you break off of 9W being the steepest. In total the loop pictured below is
5 miles with 500 feet of gain.
The Great Climb of Bear Mountain
For 1250 vertical feet over 4.5 miles, start from 9W near the Hudson River and climb Perkins Memorial Drive all the way to the top. The average grade is 5 – 6% with sections up to 10%. A day trip from NYC on your bike will give you around 100 miles to Bear Mountain and back.
Time Trial at Henry Hudson Drive
From the Boat Basin on the far end of this scenic river drive to the Ranger Station is about 1 mile and will give you a 7% grade climb. Consider this route anytime you are heading out to Piermont or Nyack. This is also included in one of our
